Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) launches the first programs for awarding an academic degree of PhD (Lat. Philosophiæ Doctor) in the new 2017–2018 academic year. To get a degree of Doctor of Philosophy, which is widespread internationally, will be possible for one of the 16 areas of study.

According to the FEFU Vice President for Research Office, the PhD programs are designed to train high school faculty and researchers. The university plans to teach PhD students in agrobiology, astronomy, biology, veterinary science, geography, geology, engineering, history, culture, mathematics, medicine, education, sociology, pharmaceutics, physics, and chemistry.

"PhD programs are a promising direction for the international promotion of the university," said Kirill Golokhvast, the FEFU Vice President for Research. "Such programs are very in demand among young researchers of Asian countries. PhD will be able to attract talented students from all over the world to FEFU and will enhance the prestige of the university in the academic community."

The graduates of the Specialist, Master and Residency programs will be able to enter the PhD programs at FEFU following the interview. The three-year educational program includes theoretical modules, internships and, most importantly, research work, which is allocated at least 60% of the total training time. Upon completion of the PhD program, a student must defend her/his PhD dissertation.
