DOOR-2016 International Conference of mathematicians working in the topical area of Discrete Optimization and Operations Research was held in FEFU. It meets every three years and is a prominent event in the scientific life of Russia. This year the main organizer of the Conference, Sobolev Institute of Mathematics of the Siberian Branch of the RAS (Novosibirsk), chose FEFU as the host. The Conference participants tell about the issues that were discussed at the Conference, its practical usefulness, and the preliminary results:

"DOOR is an acronym for the Conference on Discrete Optimization and Operations Research," said one of the Conference organizers Professor Yuri Kochetov, DSc (Phys & Math), researcher at the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics. "The main theme of the Conference is mathematical programming and mathematical optimization. This area of mathematics solves practical problems; one can use it to find the keys to solving the many challenges in the field of telecommunication networks, energy systems, transport and urban planning, logistics, etc.

One of the important objectives of the Conference is to broaden contacts of Russian and international researchers. So, DOOR is another door to the international science as well. Several professors from Europe, China, and the United States became the guests of FEFU this year. Professor at the University of Florida (United States) and the faculty member of the Higher School of Economics (Russia) Panos Pardalos is one of the participants and organizers of the Conference.

"Russia has a very good mathematical education and lots of good mathematicians," said Panos Pardalos. "They are known all over the world, and it's very interesting to work with them. Back in 2011 I began working with the Higher School of Economics, worked with scientists from St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, and now I'm in Vladivostok, FEFU. I have prepared the report on the robustness (stability) of networks for the Conference. This topic is important to optimize the reliability of various kinds of networks—electrical, railway, and telecommunication ones—and to improve their stability.

The FEFU School of Natural Sciences (SNS) became one of the organizers of the Conference. Scientists at the Departments of Physics and Mathematics Cluster of the School of Natural Sciences actively participated in this international meeting of researchers. The youth scientific school has become a part of the program, during which postgraduate students and the students of the FEFU School of Natural Science listened to lectures and reports by the prominent mathematicians.

"DOOR Conference is an event in the scientific life of FEFU," said Evgeni Nurminski, Co-chairman of the Program Committee, DSc (Phys & Math), Professor of the FEFU School of Natural Sciences. "It is a great honor for our University to be the co-organizer of the conference of one of the leading scientific centers of Russia in the field of applied mathematics. Several world-renowned experts participate in it. Communication with them and their lectures delivered during the Conference are of great educational value for students. Participation of our scientists in the Conference means a stimulus for the emergence of collaborative projects and grants.

According to Professor Nurminski, an important outcome of the Conference is the publication of its proceedings in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science Series by Springer International Publishing. The FEFU researchers are among the authors. This publication is included into the ones indexed by Scopus and Web of Science, which will contribute to increasing citation of the researchers from FEFU.

In September 2016 several major conferences will be held in FEFU. Among them are XXIInd X-ray and Electronic Spectra and Chemical Bonding All-Russian Conference with international participation (20-23 September), IInd Modern Technologies and the Development of Polytechnic Education International Conference (20-23 September), XIVth Asian Network for Quality Congress (21-23 September). Such concentration of activity shows that FEFU becomes recognized as the research and education center of Russia and the Asia-Pacific region, and the center of attraction for scholars, practitioners, and experts from all over the world.
