For Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU), 2020 was marked by the development of international cooperation and increased interaction with foreign partners in the online environment. The University continued to work to strengthen the position of Russia’s education in the world and expand the network of its own foreign missions.

Growth in foreign and Russian ranking systems

Far Eastern Federal University is on the 493rd line of the updated QS World University Ranking (QS WUR) 2021, having risen by 47 positions compared to 2019. FEFU also took 25th place in the ranking of the 100 best universities in Russia, having risen by three positions compared to 2019 (28th place) according to the RAEX analytical agency (RAEX-Analytics) based on the results of assessing the development indicators of 164 Russian universities.

Participation in the events of the Russia’s Presidency in BRICS

FEFU President Nikita Anisimov and Vice-President for International Relations, Scientific Supervisor of the BRICS Russia Expert Council of BRICS Victoria Panova took part in international events. They presented the role of education and science in the post-coronavirus era, digitalization trends and the need to use modern technologies to counter global threats.

Internship program for students of BRICS countries

70 students from Brazil, India, China and South Africa and 38 Russian participants in the Academic Excellence and Honors Education (AEHE) program united the first educational program BRICS Educational Internship Program at FEFU. The program included the most relevant educational areas for BRICS: International Relations and Business, Medicine, Cybersecurity, International Business and Project Management, Aquatic Biological Research. Students took part in lectures, research seminars, defended design work, and had the opportunity to discuss the current global agenda, study Russia's foreign policy and its role in BRICS.

APEC conferences at FEFU

University presidents, heads of educational agencies and research institutes, experts and eminent scientists met at the IX Conference on Cooperation in Higher Education in the Asia-Pacific Region (APEC): "A New Era of Digital Education: A Multilateral Approach and Challenges for APEC" at FEFU. 15 APEC economies were represented at the event. The result of the forum was a final document with recommendations.

FEFU president took park at the meeting of APRU Presidents

FEFU President Nikita Anisimov spoke about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Russian Far East, FEFU and education in general at the online meeting of the presidents of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) 2020. Speaking to colleagues, the FEFU President noted that this year the admissions campaign was entirely in electronic format. The university has launched a series of online webinars especially for foreign applicants.

Nikita Anisimov took part in the online meeting of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU). He told how, in the conditions of COVID-19, it was possible to transfer the university to e-learning in just 4 days, what measures are being taken to support teachers to adapt them to new conditions and students who have lost their jobs due to quarantine. The university had to assume the role of a leader and guide in the new environment to create a comfortable, healthy and economically stable model of life.

Winter schools for foreign school and university students

At the beginning of winter, before the borders were closed, FEFU held a short-term program for high school students from Heilongjiang Province and Inner Mongolia. The participants of the winter school communicated with students, studied Russian and got to know the culture, as well as the opportunities offered by the university. The VI International Winter School Ice Mechanics brought together students and young scientists from the Republic of Korea and Russia. For a week they jointly studied the properties and structure of natural ice. The results will be used to determine the load on structures and ships that operate in ice conditions in the Arctic, subarctic and Sakhalin shelf.

Opening FEFU Representative Office in India

In January, the FEFU Representative Office was solemnly open at Amity University, Noida (India). The new partnership format allows the two universities to cooperate in the framework of joint scientific research, academic mobility programs, as well as the study of languages and cultures of the two countries. The Representative Office is established to help operational interaction between universities and make a significant contribution to attracting foreign students to study at FEFU.

Messages of goodness and health to hospitals of China from the FEFU Medical Center

More than 300 drawings and crafts have been sent to hospitals in China to support doctors and patients battling coronavirus infection. Children from Russia decided to morally help doctors in the fight against the virus. In their works, the people reflected love and sympathy, friendly relations between countries, the joy of doctors and patients from the victory over the coronavirus. The action "Hand in Hand, Heart to Heart" was held at the FEFU Medical Center.

Research work of FEFU Representative Office in Beijing

FEFU Representative Office in Beijing won a grant from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research for research "Development of Strategic Partnership between Russia and China in East Asia." As a leading center for international cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region, the university will prepare practical recommendations for interaction between the two countries in various fields.

Webinars for international applicants

More than 200 applicants from Brazil, India, Nigeria, Egypt and Korea attended a series of webinars from FEFU. The participants got acquainted not only with the areas of training, but also learned about their career prospects, living in hostels and extracurricular activities at the university. Together with Rossotrudnichestvo in Lebanon, the youth of the Middle East also learned about FEFU. Students from Egypt, Lebanon, Palestine, as well as a graduate from Yemen shared their experience of studying at the university with the participants.

120-th Anniversary of Korean Studies in Russia’s Far East

For 120th anniversary of the creation of the world's first department of Korean literature in the Far East, a commemorative plaque was opened in the historical building of the Institute of Oriental Studies on Pushkinskaya Street. The Department of Korean Literature was opened under the leadership of Grigory Podstavin in 1900 in Vladivostok on the basis of the Oriental Institute, exactly one year after its foundation. At that time, it became the only institution in the world where the Korean language was taught professionally by qualified professors.

FEFU promotes Russian language in Vietnam

The TruD test was organized by the FEFU Representative Office in Vietnam in cooperation with the Institute of Foreign Languages of Vietnam National University. The event was attended by about 150 people studying Russian as a foreign language in various educational institutions in Vietnam. Each participant was awarded a certificate, and the top ten received prizes from the organizers.

FEFU models the format of international organizations

FEFU students received an exceptional experience of debating in the format of representing states at the first model of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and Model UN events. This is how the Model UN Annual Conference broke its historic record for geographical diversity thanks to its online format. And on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the international organization, the “UN Office” was opened at FEFU, where students can discuss topical global world problems and get a unique experience of interaction with acting representatives of UN institutions.

Scientific relations of FEFU and Kanazawa University

FEFU Polytechnic Institute and Kanazawa University actively develop Japanese-Russian cooperation in the field of academic mobility and international exchange programs. Universities held a series of joint online seminars in English for graduate students. The participants came to the conclusion that it is necessary to further develop joint cooperation to improve the environmental situation in the world.

More than 3,500 foreign students from 74 countries study at FEFU. Last year, representatives of Algeria, Bahrain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ghana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cuba, Iran, Mali, Nepal, Somalia, Croatia, Chile, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia and South Africa showed interest in the educational programs of the university. The office of the Vice-President for International Relations notes the positive dynamics of increasing the attractiveness of FEFU among foreign applicants.
