The 81^st General Meeting of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) began at Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) on October 2. Committees of the non-governmental organization that prepares and publishes international standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies will work at FEFU for two weeks. Over this time, 312 meetings will take place, in which 1,575 delegates from more than 40 countries will take part.

The IEC General Meeting annually gathers the heads of national standards bodies, technologists, scientists, and top managers of leading companies in the field of electrical engineering: Samsung, Fujitsu, Toshiba, Mitsubishi Electric, Bosch, Siemens, Kingston, LG, and others. Holding the General Meeting is an opportunity for the country to demonstrate its attention to high technologies and advanced trends. Russia hosts the forum for the first time in 40 years: the previous meeting took place in Moscow in 1977.

At the FEFU sessions, the participants will discuss the development of standardization at the international and regional levels, new directions in the field of smart technologies, industrial automation, and the digital industry. The development of an international electrotechnical dictionary, the integration of renewable energy sources into power systems, electrical equipment and systems for railways, electroacoustics and safety requirements are also on the agenda.

The largest delegations—more than 200 persons—were sent to the meeting by China, Japan, and the United States. The Russian group of experts is headed by Alexey Abramov, the Head of the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology (Rosstandart), who will arrive at the forum on October 9.

The General Meeting is the highest governing body of the International Electrotechnical Commission. There are 174 technical bodies operating under the IEC in total, covering various areas of electronics and electrical engineering in all branches of industry. The standards adopted by the commission contribute to the elimination of technical barriers to trade, are used to ensure safety, improve product quality, energy efficiency, and promote the dissemination of advanced technologies.

Far Eastern Federal University today is the center of Russia's integration into the Asia-Pacific region and the main congress and exhibition venue in the Russian Far East. During a year the FEFU campus hosts more than 230 conferences, forums, symposiums and meetings, which are attended by more than 50,000 people.
