Since 2012, summits have been held on the campus territory, major decisions are made that affect the geopolitical situation in the region. Traditionally, the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), held annually in September, has become the main platform for the dialogue of world leaders in FEFU. In 2018 the EEF brought together Presidents of Russia and Mongolia, Chairman of the People’s Republic of China, and Prime Ministers of the Republic of Korea and Japan at the university campus.

Acting as a platform for international dialogue, Far Eastern Federal University strengthens scientific and educational cooperation with foreign countries. It is possible that the meeting between Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un will also contribute to the expansion of bilateral humanitarian and educational ties.

“49 students from the DPRK are currently studying at FEFU in absolutely different majors, a number of students are taking preparatory Russian language courses with a view to their subsequent entry into Russia. In addition, we have three main partners in the DPRK: Kim Chaek University of Technology, Kim Il-sung University, the country's main university, and the Pyongyang Institute of Foreign Studies. I would like to expect that, as a result of the meeting on April 25, we will intensify humanitarian and educational cooperation, a greater number of joint conferences, perhaps mutual cultural and language exchanges”, said FEFU Vice-President for International Relations Victoria Panova.

FEFU pays special attention not only to holding international meetings, creating the investment attractiveness of the Far East and developing its economic and humanitarian relations with the Asia-Pacific countries, but also internationalizing education, creating world-class intellectual products and enhancing academic reputation abroad. FEFU enrolls more than 3,500 students from 74 countries and, although 60% of students represent the Asia-Pacific Region, it should be noted that graduates from America, Africa, and Europe also consider the university as their alma mater.

The year of 2019 is the year of the 120th anniversary of the establishment of the Institute of Oriental Studies, which symbolized the starting point of higher education in the Russian Far East and modern FEFU. Both at the end of the 19th century and now, the university is faced with the task of being at the forefront of Russia's geopolitical interests in the APR, promoting the formation of strategic relations with Asian states, and adequately representing Russian education and science in the region. FEFU is famous for the oldest and the leading school of oriental studies in the country; it preserves century-old traditions and sets its own, new, successfully implementing training of specialists not only in the field of international relations, economics, and regional studies, but also bioengineering, robotics, information technologies.
