The Representative Office of Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) in Beijing (People's Republic of China) won a grant from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR) for the study “Development of the strategic partnership of Russia and China in East Asia”. As the leading center for international cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region (APR), the university will prepare practical recommendations on the interaction of the two countries in various fields.

“We are pleased to note that the work of the Representative Office makes a tangible result in the strategic cooperation between Russia and China. Over the year of joint activity, we have developed common positions on a wide range of issues, work on which will continue in the format of a research grant. This initiative involves the remote work of leading scientists from Far Eastern Federal University and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and we intend to contribute to its full implementation”, said Victoria Panova, FEFU Vice-President for International Relations.

The won grant will allow conducting a large-scale study of the state and prospects of cooperation between Russia and China on economic, diplomatic and political issues in East Asia; to consider the possibilities of interaction between the two countries on such important issues for the Asia-Pacific region as the joint development of science and education, the fuel and energy and mining industries, trade and transport infrastructure; assess possible threats in the Asia-Pacific region and methods for combating them. From a practical point of view, the relevance of the study is due primarily to the fact that East Asia today is one of the main directions of Russia's foreign policy, including taking into account the priority development of the Far East. The main applied result of the project will be the development of recommendations to improve the effectiveness of a mutually beneficial strategic partnership between Russia and China in East Asia.

Thus, FEFU Representative Office will take on the expert function of the practical interaction of the two countries. A thorough and comprehensive analysis of Russian-Chinese relations, the identification of their coincidences and possible contradictions is necessary for Russia to conduct an optimal policy in the East Asian direction.

In addition, for the first year of its operation, FEFU Representative Office in Beijing organized a series of expert round tables, a scientific competition “China through the Eyes of Young Russians” with an encouraging cultural and educational trip for FEFU students.

FEFU Representative Office was opened on the basis of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing on April 1, 2019. A new FEFU foreign branch is called upon to promote cooperation in the field of scientific research of Russian-Chinese relations, ensure efficient and mutually beneficial work with Chinese universities, and attract new foreign students. The response to the opening of a Representative Office in Beijing was the creation of the Center for Chinese Studies at FEFU, which was presented at the V Eastern Economic Forum in September 2019.

The activities of the FEFU Representative Office in Beijing are an important element in the implementation of the priority direction of the development of the university as a center of international cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. The University is a participant and co-founder of 16 inter-university organizations, among which it is worth noting the work of the Association of Pacific Universities (APRU), where FEFU is the only Russian university-member. Over the past two years, in addition to Beijing, Representative Offices have been opened in Tokyo (based on the University of Tokai, Japan), in Hanoi (on the basis of Vietnam National University, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam), and in India (Amity University, Noida). In addition, FEFU remains the only Russian university with a branch in Japan (Hakodate, Hokkaido).
