FEFU is one of the best universities for tourism education in Russia. Where, if not here on Russian Island, at the end of the earth, is it better to know how to conquer space and plan your trip? FEFU academics were the first in Primorsky Krai who began to develop tourism as a field of education; the most popular textbooks are published here and successful specialists in the field of tourism graduate from the university.
Tourism education at FEFU is personified by its successful graduates. One of them is Alexander Rodionov, a graduate of 2001, the Managing Director of Tsar Events international tourism company, which he founded in St. Petersburg. Alexander studied in Vladivostok, but did practical training in St. Petersburg tourist company, where he managed to draw attention to himself. Thanks to his knowledge of English, Alexander began to work successfully in Russkie Prostori (Russian Open Spaces) Finnish company, which specializes in organizing incentive tours to Russia for international tourists.
Several years ago Alexander Rodionov established his own tourist company, which deals with the reception of high profile international guests in Russia. The most known among those with whom he worked are Pepsi-Cola, IBM, General Electric... Since 2011, Alexander Rodionov's company is the member and winner of international competitions in the field of tourism. It has been recognized as the leading Russian company in the tourism destination management at the World Travel Awards competition in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Alexander was the first in Russia to be awarded with the international certifications of the Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) and the Destination Management Certified Professional (DMCP). He is the only holder of such certifications outside of North America.
The younger generation success is the reflection of the quality of their school and years of experience of their teachers. Tourism education in Primorsky Krai started in 1992 at the Pacific State Economic University (TSUE), which later joined FEFU. Alexander Kosolapov, the Doctor of Medical Sciences and Professor of the FEFU Department of Service and Tourism, has become one of the seniors in this area. Despite the remoteness of Vladivostok, he is one of the leading tourism education professionals in Russia. The whole country and the states of the former Soviet Union are studying by using his textbooks. According to KnoRus, one of the Russia's largest publishers of textbooks, the teaching aids by Alexander Kosolapov were purchased by many universities of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, and Kazakhstan.
As the head of the publishing department of the School of Economics and Management Alexander Karlovsky pointed out, by the beginning of 2016 the total circulation of the ten titles of textbooks and teaching aids by Professor Kosolapov, published in KnoRus in recent years, has exceeded 60,000 copies. This is a record in the post Soviet space for the Russian authors of textbooks in Service, Geography, Biology, Medicine and other areas, excluding Law, where the circulation is huge.
A group of caring students have developed among the School students, for whom the tourism education is not just a way to get a degree, but a lifelong mission, a vocation. Anastasia Gurkova, Tatiana Rodnova, Daria Gurinovich, Ksenia Kurtz and the graduate student from Syria Mohannad Ali Mohammad, the students who want to have their say in the tourism business, they write research papers, develop new tourist destinations, and arrange guided tours.
"I'm studying Tourism, and besides English I am also learning Chinese and Turkish", says the School of Economics and Management student Anastasia Gurkova. "I am in my fourth year now, but I already have job offers from potential employers. In scientific terms, I am interested in the development of educational tourism in Primorsky Krai and the Asia Pacific countries, and I am writing the degree thesis on the Vostochny (Eastern) Cosmodrome in the Amur Oblast province as a tourist site. This is a completely new and very promising area of cultural and educational tourism.
Currently there are several education programs in tourism at the School of Economics and Management: Tourism, Hotel Management (Bachelor's Degree) and Innovative Tourism: Theory and Practice (Master's Degree). They are for those who want to work in tourism, the one of the most promising sectors of the economy and interesting spheres of human life.
