The impact of virtual reality (VR) on a person's ability to self-control is studied at Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU). With the help of VR glasses, researchers immerse participants in the experiment in a contrasting virtual reality with comfortable and stressful sensations. The obtained data will be used for the preparation of research works.

“Every year, VR glasses are becoming more developed and accessible, and VR technologies are actively interfering to our lives. Therefore, knowledge of how virtual reality affects a person’s daily behavior and ability to self-control is very important. It is necessary to be aware of the risks, potential and hidden threats that accompany these technologies”, said Aleksei Tumyalis, researcher at the FEFU School of Arts and Humanities.

Before starting the session, a person passes a special test. Then he plunges into a contrasting virtual reality with comfortable and strong stressful sensations: first he sees relaxing landscapes, and then he gets on a virtual roller coaster. At the end of the experiment, the subject again passes the test. The reaction of participants to VR is recorded in three ways: an electrocardiogram, galvanic skin response (bioelectric activity associated with perspiration) and respiration. The whole experiment takes about two hours.

To obtain reliable conclusions, it is planned to analyze the data of at least a hundred people. Anyone from 18 to 45 years old can take part in the experiment. Applications should be sent to Alexey Vyacheslavovich Tumeyalis by email tumialis.av@dvfu.ru. Studies will be conducted until April 30.
