A student of Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU), Yaroslav Shevchenko, became the winner of the Bharat Ko Janiye Quiz (international India knowledge quiz) organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of India. The medal of the competition winner in the category “Foreigners” was awarded to the fourth-year student by Mr. Shubham Kumar, the Consul General of the Republic of India in Vladivostok.

Yaroslav Shevchenko’s major is “International Relations”, the Institute of Oriental Studies - School of Regional and International Studies. According to the results of the competition, he was among the best participants from around the world and was invited to India as the main prize. The Consul General Shubham Kumar praised the student for his interest in the country and wished further success to the FEFU Institute of Oriental Studies - School of Regional and International Studies, where Hindi is currently being studied.

“India’s importance in international relations is growing every year, so it was interesting for me to deepen my knowledge through this competition. The quiz was held in English, but for me, it was not a problem, because during four years of study at FEFU I received very good language training,” shared Yaroslav Shevchenko.

Contest participants were asked to answer online questions on history, economics, geography, art, and other areas of the country's life. The winners will go on a 15-day trip to India, funded by the Government of the Republic.

“The success of our student in this competition shows that India is getting closer to FEFU, and the university has great potential for the development of Indology. This is a contribution to strengthening ties with our partners and to Russian-Indian cooperation in general”, said Evgeny Pustovoit, Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies - School of Regional and International Studies.

The study of India and its languages has been conducted at Far Eastern Federal University since 1993, simultaneously with the opening of a diplomatic mission in Vladivostok. Currently, future Indologists are studying India in the framework of the "Foreign Regional Studies" major. Over 180 students from the Republic of India study at the University’s School of Biomedicine on the General Medicine program.
