Oct 30, 2017 - FEFU News

Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) has a special mission to develop software in Russia and to become a platform for its promotion to the Asian markets. This opinion was expressed by Roman Povolotsky, the leader of the Cyber Russia Project, in the VR/AR/MR plenary discussion. A conversation about virtual reality and the latest developments in this area took place on the Russky MeetUp IT forum at FEFU on October 23.

“Virtual reality and digital production technologies are already an integral part of our society. They affect everyone's life, and they change it. The main issue that we are solving is to provide a quality education in this area,” said Roman Povolotsky. “FEFU became the first university in Russia, which launched a master's degree program in virtual and augmented reality in 2017.”

Now, 120 master's students in Game Development & VR are learning how to develop and implement advanced IT products. Heads of the study area pay special attention to the synthesis of classical areas of expertise—marketing, PR, and trade—with the software development. This approach will help teach future professionals to successfully introduce new technologies into existing markets. To this end, students are already solving real cases, which FEFU was provided by interested companies from Russia and Asia. Students develop augmented reality for warehouse management in this semester.

“I hope that in the next few years we will see a flow of technological startups in digital production,” said Roman Povolotsky. “And later, through FEFU, we will be able to export these developments to the Asian markets.”

As part of the discussion, Alexander Borisov from Visualiz and Taras Gurko, the creator of the Virtual Reality Laboratory, gave advice to novice developers from FEFU and told about the world's achievements in the area of VR. Participants also discussed the possible disappearance of certain professions, such as taxi drivers, accountants, lawyers and marketers, who will be replaced by artificial intelligence in the near future—more productive and trouble-free.

Russky MeetUp is a global forum of the IT community that is held on the basis of the Far Eastern Federal University from October 23 to 25. Company executives, IT experts, federal and international experts, students, faculty and scholars discuss new projects for the development of the digital economy in the Far East and Russia as a whole, the launch of IT startups onto world markets and the role of FEFU in these processes.

The organizers of the forum are FEFU, PrimaMedia Media Holding, the Skolkovo Foundation's Far Eastern Branch, and the Agency for Human Capital Development in the Far East.
