Dec 9, 2016 - FEFU News

Anna Timokhina, Alexandra Kosyreva, and Julia Nedelkina, female students of Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU), won the 15th Conference of the Model United Nations of the Russian Far East (MUNRFE) and were entitled to represent Russia at the National MUN Conference in New York in 2017. About a hundred students from Russia and the Asia-Pacific countries contested for the right to attend the main event for young diplomats.

At the International Conference the FEFU students modeled the work of the UN General Assembly, the Security Council, the World Bank, and the Human Rights Council, by taking on the role of diplomats of different countries. For four days the delegates discussed measures to preserve the global climate, the rights of refugees, ensuring the safety of journalists during armed conflicts, measures to address the humanitarian crisis in Syria, and other topics.

According to Elena Kiseleva, the MUNRFE Executive Director, postgraduate student of the FEFU Oriental Institute–School of Regional and International Studies (OI–SRIS), the entire Conference was held as close as possible to the actual meetings of the UN. The debates culminated in the adoption of the General Assembly final resolution and the vote for the best diplomats.

By the decision of the colleagues and the jury, main awards—the Outstanding Delegate title—was won by Anna Timokhina (School of Economics and Management), Alexandra Kosyreva and Julia Nedelkina (OI–SRIS). Alena Filimonova (OI–SRIS) was recognized as the author of the best documents prepared at the Conference. Paulina Varfolomeeva (OI–SRIS) was chosen as the Outstanding Delegate of the General Assembly. The France (Amur State University) and the Great Britain (Far Eastern Federal University) teams were recognized as the Outstanding Delegations.

In March 2017 the winners will represent FEFU and Russia at the large-scale conference to be held at the United Nations Headquarters, which will bring together thousands of young leaders from around the world. FEFU students have been involved in the National Model United Nations from 2011. In 2014 and 2015 the young diplomats were awarded the title of Outstanding Delegation, and the awards for the Outstanding Position of the Country in 2016.
