Ten Japanese high school students from Kanto International Senior High School (Tokyo) arrived in Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) within the framework of international exchange programs. The school students from the Land of the Rising Sun will make an in-depth study of the Russian Language and Literature; get acquainted with Russian culture on sightseeing tours and theme master-classes within a month.

FEFU has been cooperating with Kanto International School for more than 25 years, said the FEFU Department of International Partnerships. This year, on the initiative of Japan, the partnership between FEFU and Kanto International Senior High School has reached a new level: from now on the exchange programs will become an annual event.

The high school students have already passed entrance tests of the Russian language and started attending their intensive classes. In the first half of the day, they study grammar and vocabulary under the supervision of instructors of the FEFU Russian Language and Culture Center of Oriental Institute–School of Regional and International Studies. In the afternoon, international guests go to master-classes on folklore, Russian art, and national cuisine. An important feature of the program is in combining study with the tour over Russia. From 4th to 9th April the high school students will visit Saint Petersburg where they will get to know main attractions of the cultural capital of Russia.

It is important to note that the participants of exchange program live with Russian families on the weekends—due to full immersion into the culture they can learn more about national life and customs of a country new for them. Students of the FEFU College of Humanities and Economics traditionally host Japanese guests and make return visits to Tokyo.

Far Eastern Federal University is the sole Russian partner of Kanto International Senior High School that specializes in foreign language teaching. Thanks to the exchange program, school students visit friendly country and learn foreign language and culture. Having graduated from school Japanese students quite often want to enter FEFU. Among current international students of the FEFU are those who came in Far Eastern Federal University some years ago within this exchange program.
