Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (National Research University) (MIPT) jointly hold a two-week summer school on bioinformatics "Molecular Technologies 2019". Educational intensive on campus on the island of Russian will last until July 18.

In addition to lectures and practical workshops, participants will get acquainted with the flora and fauna of Primorye, visit the Primorsky Aquarium, the Land of the Leopard National Park, the greenhouse complex of the Virology Laboratory of the Federal Science Center of Biodiversity of the Far East Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

According to the head of the summer school, the Head of the Scientific Laboratory of the Ecology of Microorganisms of the School of Biomedicine, the Doctor of biological sciences Mikhail Schelkanov, this is a very important experience of interaction between universities with a very rich program: each field output is followed by a detailed cameral analysis of the collected material, work with determinants, practical manipulations and obtaining theoretical knowledge in the field of DNA barcoding - a modern method of classification of living organisms on the basis of molecular genetic data. After returning to the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, students will continue to work with biological materials collected during the summer practice, within the relevant training modules.

“The work of students has not only educational, but also undoubted scientific and practical importance,” said Victoria Skobeeva, Head of the summer biological practice of students at MIPT, Ph.D. “With the help of the obtained results, we plan to expand our understanding of the genetic diversity of the ecosystems of the south of the Far East.”

This is the second summer school in the field of bioinformatics held at FEFU, the first one was held last year as part of the educational intensive “Island 10-21”. The experience was recognized so successful that the MIPT Endowment Fund found it possible to support the event in 2019. The plans of the joint research and educational team are to transform Molecular Technologies into a regular scientific and educational platform.
