For the first time the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) member universities will visit APEC Conference on Cooperation in Higher Education in Asia-Pacific Region to be held at Far Federal University (FEFU) in early September 2017. This was announced by Vladimir Kurilov, FEFU Academic Supervisor, following the meeting of the APRU International Policy Advisory Committee in Hong Kong.
"Official delegations of the ministries of education and science of APEC economies traditionally come to the conference, but universities will participate directly for the first time," explained Vladimir Kurilov. "APRU is extremely interested in contacts with APEC, as the association seeks to ensure that universities are involved in solving the state and international problems of the region."
The APEC International Conference will be held at FEFU for the sixth time, continuing the series of meetings on the promotion of cross-border education in the Asia-Pacific Region held in Vladivostok in 2012-2016. The participants discuss and resolve specific issues of the APEC economies in the areas of education, science and human capital development. The main theme of the forum in 2017 will be region-wide recognition of academic diplomas and degrees.
Also following the committee's meeting in Hong Kong, participants prepared proposals for the APRU Annual Presidents' Meeting, to be held in Sydney, Australia, in June. The main themes of the association's work this year are the future of the Pacific Ocean, global climate change, and its impact on society.
"APRU is an elite organization where FEFU has been the only representative from Russia for 20 years. This association is the strongest in the Asia-Pacific region and, undoubtedly, one of the strongest in the world," Vladimir Kurilov emphasized. "When the University entered APRU in 1997, many did not understand what the Russian university was doing in it. But gradually we began to be respected, first of all, for a strong science and a high level of education."
The Association of Pacific Rim Universities was founded in 1997 and Far Eastern State University (now FEFU) became one of its founders. Today APRU unites 45 leading universities in the region from Australia, Indonesia, Canada, China, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, Russia, Singapore, USA, Thailand, Taiwan, Philippines, Chile, and Japan. In the summer of 2017, FEFU will host one of the official events of the Association, APRU Undergraduate Leaders’ Program.
