The founding congress of the Association of top universities of Russia and Japan will be held in Far Eastern Federal University. Hideki Iwabuchi, Director, Office for International Planning, Higher Education Bureau, Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, at the meeting with Alexey Koshel, FEFU Vice President for General Affairs, has proposed to hold the first meeting of the university representatives on the eve of the third Eastern Economic Forum.

According to the FEFU Vice President, following the results of his business trip to Japan, the idea to unite universities was raised at the VI International Forum of University Presidents of the two countries, which was held in Moscow in October, 2016. The FEFU Interim President Nikita Anisimov participated in it.

“Now, against the backdrop of a constructive dialogue between the leaders of our countries, the Russian-Japanese cooperation in the field of education only intensifies. To FEFU, which rightly advocates a link between Russian education and educational space of the Asia-Pacific region, the establishment of such an association with our direct, possibly even leading participation, is a major step in the advancement of the Russian education and science in the Asia-Pacific region,” said Alexey Koshel. “FEFU develops relations with 26 universities in Japan, and whoever but us should act as the leader of the new organization.’

About 30 leading universities of Russia and Japan, among which are Lomonosov Moscow State University, Higher School of Economics, University of Tohoku, Hokkaido University and others, expressed their willingness to join the Association. The preliminary meeting of the representatives of universities is scheduled to take place on FEFU campus in April, 2017.
