The Center for the Study of Russian–Japanese Relations was established at Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) with the support of Mitsubishi Corporation (Russia) LLC. Within the framework of the Eastern Economic Forum, the agreement was signed by Nikita Anisimov, the FEFU Interim President, and  Furusawa Minoru, the Director General of Mitsubishi Corporation (Russia) LLC. Young Japonologists and specialists in Russian–Japanese relations will jointly work at the first Center for the territories of the two countries.

"The main mission of the Center is a comprehensive study of political, economic and socio-humanitarian relations between Russia and Japan to improve mutual understanding between our peoples," said the FEFU Interim President Nikita Anisimov.

"Russia is a very important partner for Japan, and our company pays more attention to the development of ties with universities," said Furusawa Minoru. "We have already been working together with FEFU for several years and are now expanding our cooperation."

The Center was created in the FEFU Oriental Institute–School of Regional and International Studies. The Japonologists and specialists in Russian-Japanese relations will comprehensively study the modern relations of the countries and prepare practical recommendations on strengthening partnership, primarily in the field of investment and economic cooperation. The Center will also publish scientific publications, organize conferences and seminars.

Since 2014, the Mitsubishi Corporation has supported the FEFU students in Japanese Studies for their success in studying the language, history, and economics of the country. The Japanese company awards personal scholarships under the corporate program aimed at supporting talented youth.

FEFU held several international events aimed at developing Russian–Japanese relations during the Eastern Economic Forum. Russian President Vladimir Putin, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Mongolia's President Khaltmaagiin Battulga handed the students a capsule with a message to future generations for the groundbreaking ceremony of international judo center construction. Also, a university judo club was opened in FEFU and the Russian–Japanese student forum was held.
