Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) concluded a memorandum of understanding with the Tokyo University of Agriculture NODAI, becoming the first Russian partner of the Japanese university. The document was signed by the FEFU Interim President Nikita Anisimov and Tokyo NODAI President Katsumi Takano on August 30. It was decided to start cooperation with the study of the agricultural potential of soils of the Far East.

Nikita Anisimov pointed out that the memorandum with Tokyo NODAI opens a new page for the development of relations with Japan and it will contribute to strengthening the humanitarian ties between the two countries. Taking into account, the rich experience and advanced developments of NODAI, the parties have chosen a comprehensive study of soils and agricultural lands in the Far East of Russia for the initial research project.

"Joint study of the potential of agricultural land in the zone of low and extremely low temperatures is of special practical importance for the accelerated development of the Far East," said Nikita Anisimov. "Besides, we are convinced that in the 21st century universities  of different countries are called upon to work together to solve the  global challenges of mankind. One of the key areas touches on issues of food security and the development of new territories in the face of climate change."

"It is very honorable for us that it was FEFU that became the first Russian partner of the NODAI University," Katsumi Takano said. "We hope for successful cooperation for the development of agriculture in the northern latitudes and effective work in related fields: health, food technologies, ecology, energy, and life expectancy research."

Mutual interest of partners is also related to projects on biotechnology, engineering, architecture, housekeeper, and other areas. Universities plan to exchange students and faculty, hold joint conferences, and offer cultural programs.

Within the framework of the forthcoming Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), Far Eastern Federal University is preparing a large number of international events aimed at developing Russian–Japanese relations. The ceremony of laying the corner stone of the first international judo center in Russia and the opening of the university judo club will take place on the FEFU campus. Also, the opening of the Center for the Study of Russian–Japanese Relations in FEFU will be announced within the framework of the EEF. The Russian-Japanese Student Forum is included in the program of the EEF Youth Section.
