Nikita Anisimov, the Interim President of Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU), met with Ian Hill, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of New Zealand to Russia, on September 29. The parties discussed opportunities for cooperation in the field of education, research, student exchanges, including those within the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU).

Nikita Anisimov said that more than 3,000 international students enrolled at Far Eastern Federal University, but there were yet no representatives of New Zealand among them. In the summer of 2017, representatives of the University of Auckland participated in the APRU Undergraduate Leaders' Program (international summer school), which was held for the first time in FEFU.

“Students from New Zealand universities are actively involved in international exchange programs, and I think they will be very interested in the opportunity to study at the University on Russky Island. I am confident that this is a promising area of cooperation between FEFU and New Zealand universities,” Ian Hill said.

The parties also discussed joint work within the Association of Pacific Rim Universities. Nikita Anisimov pointed out that only in partnership universities could meet the Grand Challenges that are facing the international community today: development of the World Ocean, the Arctic, outer space, the issues of ecology and public health, the development of virtual space, cybersecurity, and others.

The Ambassador read a lecture on New Zealand to the students of Oriental Institute–School of Regional and International Studies prior to the meeting. At the meeting with the Interim President, Ian Hill noted the genuine interest of the audience to his speech, and Nikita Anisimov, in turn, invited the academics and scholars from the New Zealand universities to become participants of the Visiting Professors Program in FEFU.

Far Eastern Federal University is rightfully considered as an international university, the leader of the internationalization of education in Russia. To date, cooperation has been established with more than 160 universities, research centers and businesses in 36 countries.
