30 students from the Republic of India started to study on the program for international students in General Medicine at Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU). For the first time in the Far East of Russia students started to pursue Medicine fully in English.

According to the Director of the FEFU School of Biomedicine Yuri Khotimchenko, domestic medical education is highly regarded in India as the Russian degrees are recognized by the state and allow medical practice. At the same time, as the head of the School points out, FEFU has advantages over other Russian HE institutions—strong basic science training, modern laboratory and clinical facilities, partnerships with leading universities of the Asia-Pacific region, and a unique campus.

"Of course, the appearance of such a large number of international students in a new General Medicine specialty is a sign that the FEFU School of Biomedicine gets serious international recognition," said Yuri Khotimchenko. "The development of the English-language subject areas is becoming one of the key priorities of our School, so we shall establish new ones."

The international program has been created by analogy with the Russian specialty and includes about 60 disciplines. From the first days in FEFU, the Indian students study courses, designed to form the basis of training for future physicians: Anatomy, Medical Chemistry, Nursing, Biology, and Latin language. Histology, Pathology, and Fundamentals of Internal Diseases will be added in the second semester and, of course, the study placement—the future doctors will be able to undertake it in the FEFU Medical Center, city hospitals, as well as directly in India.

General Medicine is taught only in English. However, says Yuri Khotimchenko, students should feel comfortable in Russia, where they will study for the next six years. To achieve this, the program includes an intensive Russian language course, and the faculty advisors actively help students learn more about the city, give advice on everyday life, the use of public transport, buying clothes and products.

FEFU enrolled a total of 3,000 students from 52 countries in 2016-2017 academic year. The leading HE institution of the region is rapidly gaining popularity in the world and enhances international competitiveness, consistently performing development indicators under the 5top100 national project.
