Far East Federal University (FEFU) is expanding the network of Russian Language Training Centers in the People's Republic of China. The new international unit of the Russian language was inaugurated in the Hunchun Vocational Senior High School during the visit of the FEFU delegation to China. In autumn of 2017, another university center in Harbin Institute of Petroleum will start operation, and the total number of them will reach 14.

“FEFU is becoming more and more vocal as a locomotive for Russia's integration into the Asia-Pacific region. The establishment of Russian Language Training Centers abroad allows us to solve the most important public task of strengthening our country's positive image in the region, further establishing bilateral and multilateral relations of the Russian Federation in the AsPac region,” said Victoria Panova, FEFU Vice President for International Relations. “Through such centers, Chinese youth are able to improve the level of proficiency in Russian, learn more about Russian culture, and, often, make a choice in favor of studying in FEFU.”

Far Eastern Federal University has started to open Russian Language Training Centers in China since 2012. The centers operate in the provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin, Shandong, Zhejiang, and Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture. The Russian language is now studied by about 700 undergraduate and school students, and the new classes will receive additional 100 ones. The project operator is the Russian Language and Culture Center of the FEFU Oriental Institute–School of Regional and International Studies.

The centers become not only a powerful mechanism for spreading the Russian language abroad, but are also key venues for promoting the university and its opportunities to prospective students from China. Classes are taught by the Russian as a Foreign Language teachers and by the Chinese teachers graduated from FEFU. At the end of the course, many of the students decide to continue their studies in Russia and enrol in the university.

Also as part of the visit to China, the staff of the FEFU International Education Department held the Ocean of Knowledge Olympiad in the universities and schools of Harbin, Hunchun, and Mudanjiang. About 400 undergraduate and school students who are interested in entering FEFU have submitted competing assignments in the Russian language and mathematics. They want to test their knowledge and to declare themselves as potential applicants.

Far East Federal University is rapidly gaining popularity in the world and increasing its international competitiveness. More than 3,200 international students from 52 countries are now studying at FEFU. The majority is represented by the Asia-Pacific countries, while the proportion of Chinese nationals in the total number of international students is 60%.

Intensive work to promote the university's educational services abroad is continuing. In early April, FEFU held the Olympiad in Vietnam, at the end of the month it is planned to organize the Ocean of Knowledge in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan—and in Mongolia in May. In June, within the Days of Primorsky Krai in Heilongjiang Province, FEFU representatives will conduct a large-scale road show, and several thousand high school and undergraduate students are expected to visit the University's presentations then.
