May 2, 2017 - International cooperation

The Center for the Study of Russian-Japanese Relations will be established at Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) with the support of Mitsubishi Corporation (Japan). The expansion of cooperation and the launching of new projects were discussed at the meeting between Nikita Anisimov, the FEFU Interim President, and Furusawa Minoru, the Director General of Mitsubishi Corporation (Russia) LLC, on 27 April.

“Russia is a very important partner for Japan, and our company is paying more attention to corporate social responsibility and development of relations with universities,” said Furusawa minor. “We have been working together with FEFU for several years now, and we propose to expand our cooperation in new areas.”

Mr. Minoru said that Mitsubishi had decided to finance in 2017 the establishment of the Center for the Study of Russian-Japanese Relations at the Oriental Institute–School of Regional and International Studies (OI–SRIS). According to Artyom Lukin, OI–SRIS Deputy Director, this will be the first such institution in the territory of the two countries, which will become a venue for the work of the FEFU young Japanese Studies researchers, as well as those of the universities in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The Mitsubishi Scholarship Program, having been implemented in FEFU since 2014, moves to a new level. The company proposes to expand the project and allocate grants to students for one-year internships at the leading universities in Japan. Students in all areas of training and courses will be eligible.

The corporation also initiated scholarships for young entrepreneurs who will study at the FEFU School of Economics and Management under the new Executive MBA program. The launch of the program, aimed at the formation of a new business community for the development of the Far East economy, is planned for autumn 2017.

“For us, the support that Mitsubishi provides to Far Eastern Federal University is very important. Active position on your part suggests that we have great prospects for cooperation,” said Nikita Anisimov. “All this clearly corresponds to the agreements reached by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during the meeting at the Eastern Economic Forum in FEFU in 2016.”

Today, FEFU is intensively developing relationships with 37 leading research and education centres, government foundations, and major companies in Japan. Research, academic exchange, grant and scholarship support programs for talented students and scientists are being jointly implemented.
