Representatives of six countries gathered by ESCAP forum at Far Eastern Federal University

The Multilateral Forum of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) on Sustainable Development Goals in North-East Asia brought together about 150 participants at Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU). From October 15 to 16, representatives of six countries (People's Republic of China, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Japan, Mongolia, Republic of Korea and the Russian Federation) discuss national and subregional issues in the implementation, as well as build a promising dialogue on partnership tasks to accelerate the process of achieving them.

Victoria Panova Vice-President for International relations: “Our university is honored to host such an important event and strengthen cooperation with the United Nations ESCAP Subregional Office for East and North-East Asia. The Forum at FEFU assists to strengthen the role of Russia and Vladivostok in the implementation of the sustainable development agenda for the period up to 2030 in Northeast Asia. The Russian Far East and its capital have an enormous capacity for social and economic development and build strong relations between Asian and Pacific partners. In this context, FEFU is committed to promoting this cooperation in various fields. The university uses advanced technologies in the educational process, its resources to train the staff of the future and competitive specialists in the labor market”.

The ESCAP Multilateral Forum in North-East Asia is part of the preparatory process for the 7th Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development in 2020. The forum provides a unique opportunity to share subregional views on the proposed topic: Accelerating Progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals in the Asia-Pacific Region. During the forum, the most socially significant issues are raised such as ensuring equality, creating a sustainable society and protecting the environment.

It is actively developing foreign economic relations with over 100 countries. The ESCAP forum will bring a significant contribution to develop economies and strengthen international relations.  

FEFU is a platform for the activities of civil society to advance the Sustainable Development Goals. Students and faculty conduct large-scale studies to find new ways to treat incurable diseases, and launch HIV / AIDS awareness initiatives. Another priority is the development of the oceans, the development of marine technologies to solve the problem of water pollution. FEFU engineers are also working on safer and cleaner ways to extract oil, gas and alternative energy sources. Far Eastern Federal University is proud of cooperation in this field with such representatives of the business community as Rosneft, Gazprom, Sakhalin Energy. Annually FEFU organizes and participates in such large-scale events as Earth Hour, United Nations Day and many others.

The Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations are 17 goals and 169 tasks that all UN member states agreed to achieve by 2030. The Sustainable Development Goals are a call to action emanating from all countries. It aims to improve well-being and protect the planet. Countries recognize the poverty eradication measures must be taken in parallel with efforts to boost economic growth and address a range of issues in the areas of education, health, social protection, and employment, as well as combating climate change and protecting the environment.
