The researchers of Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) and Japan will work out the development of new technologies for building highways and port infrastructure under extreme conditions. The cooperation was initiated with the FEFU agreement with the Civil Engineering Research Institute for Cold Region (Hokkaido Island).

According to Alexander Becker, Director of the Far Eastern Federal University School of Engineering, Japanese colleagues suggested working together on highway construction technologies in areas with heavy snowfalls, combating icing and snowdrifts, erecting protective infrastructure against waves and tsunamis for ports. This is a new subject for FEFU researchers, but their significant experience in the field of arctic construction, the study of ice, snow and their impact on engineering facilities will serve as the foundation.

“The Japanese Institute has become interested in our research on Arctic topics and offshore construction. Besides, we already have experience of joint research work on the use of ice and snow energy for air conditioning systems, therefore I am confident in the success of new projects,” Alexander Becker added. “The concluded agreement will also allow our students and young researchers to undergo an internship in Japan.”

FEFU is one of the leaders in the field of engineering developments for cold regions. The Arctic Center successfully works at the School of Engineering, which provides scientific support for new projects on the shelf of the northern seas. Every year the university hosts the winter Ice Mechanics School, where Russian and international students work with natural ice, study the features of construction of ice-class vessels and technical facilities.

Far East Federal University has been intensively developing ties with Japan. To date, partnership agreements have been concluded with more than 40 universities and research centers of the country. Research and conferences are jointly conducted, academic articles are published, universities exchange students and faculty.
