Jul 5, 2017 - International cooperation

Kaoru Maruta, Professor of Tohoku University (Japan), one of the leading scientists in the field of combustion, was awarded the title Honorary Doctor of Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU). Nikita Anisimov, FEFU Interim President, held the special commencement ceremony of awarding the diploma and memorable sign at the meeting of the Academic Council on June 30.

"Kaoru Maruta was awarded for fruitful cooperation with the university, outstanding achievements in research activities, which had a significant impact on the development of science and university education, the growth of the international prestige of FEFU," said Nikita Anisimov.

Professor Kaoru Maruta is a leading researcher of the International Combustion and Energy Laboratory, FEFU School of Engineering. The center, where breakthrough research in the field of new combustion technologies is being conducted today, was opened in 2014 as part of the implementation of the mega-grant of the Government of Russia, which was won by Professor Maruta.

For a short period of time, the Japanese scientist succeeded in forming an international network of researchers and showing significant results. Kaoru Maruta told about the results achieved in his research report presented at the FEFU Academic Council.

The laboratory specializes in developing environmentally friendly and efficient methods of burning hydrocarbon fuels. Researchers conduct fundamental and experimental studies of combustion waves, micro-burning, combustion of gases in porous media, combustion limits, and experiments in microgravity. These works laid the foundation for the development of gas combustion technologies and allowed to create the first prototype devices of new generation (burners) that consume half the energy.

The laboratory also joined the collaborative project with the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences to develop power plants for remote areas of Siberia and the Far East. They will be highly efficient, operate without an open flame, using a variety of types of hydrocarbon fuels.

The Regulation on conferring the title Honorary Doctor of Far Eastern Federal University was approved in April 2017. The award is conferred to international and Russian leading scholars, distinguished educators, eminent state and public figures by the open vote of the FEFU Academic Council members. The first title was awarded to Aristides Tsatsakis (Greece), President of the Federation of European Toxicologists & European Societies of Toxicology (EUROTOX).
