Ten projects of Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) reached the final of the contest to get grants of the Russian Federation Government to support scientific research led by prominent scientists. Proposals of 267 finalists have been directed to international examination, which will identify the projects eligible for megagrants.

The experts approved FEFU applications for conducting comprehensive studies on ensuring environmental safety in the Arctic, creating new food products, methods of treatment, developing underwater data networks, magnetic materials and technologies for smart systems, conducting environmental monitoring and studying global climate change, archeology, and other areas.

“Ten of the fifteen FEFU applications have reached the final of the megagrant contest, which constitutes a major achievement for the university. Each of the projects has been carefully elaborated and focused on solving the grand challenges facing the Asia-Pacific region and the world community as a whole,” emphasized Kirill Golokhvast, the FEFU Vice President for Research. “We invite leading scientists for these projects: outstanding Russian and international researchers, as well as compatriots who have gone abroad and now want to return to work in Russia.”

The applications of all the finalists of the contest have been directed to international examination. Based on its findings, the Grant Council will sum up the results in the middle of November 2017.

Contest for receiving megagrants of the Government of Russia is held for the sixth time. Earlier, Far Eastern Federal University won it twice. Since 2010, Vladimir Malakhov, head of the Department of Zoology of Marine Invertebrates, Lomonosov Moscow State University, has launched the Biology of Marine Invertebrates project at FEFU, and in 2013 Kaoru Maruta, professor at Tohoku University (Japan), received a grant for the development of new combustion technologies.
