The participants of the Future of Biomedicine (FOB 2017) international conference at Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) present the findings of the latest biomedical research. Experts from around the world share their achievements in the field of molecular medicine, epigenetics, pharmacology, gene therapy and other fields from 10 to 15 September. Master classes, where scientists, students, and practitioners are introduced to the latest technologies for research, are being held at the same time.

The key speaker of FOB 2017 was Bill Ernshaw, the authoritative cell biologist, Professor at the University of Edinburgh (UK), member of the London Royal Society (Hirsch index 94). The main speech he devoted aneuplodia (violation of the chromosome set) and the study of the structure of chromosomes. The conference participants learned about this research of the scientist first in the world.

"I introduced a new understanding of how the cell manages to 'pack' the chromosomes. These findings have been obtained using the most modern methods, including genomics, and they have not yet been published. Studies were conducted at the University of Edinburgh, the University of Massachusetts, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with the participation of Russian physicists," Bill Earnshaw said.

Alexander Kagansky, the Head of the Center for Genomic and Regenerative Medicine, School of Biomedicine, Far Eastern Federal University, noted that the main idea of the FOB 2017 Cconference is to bring advanced knowledge about cellular mechanisms in accordance with the needs of modern medicine.

"The program emphasizes high-tech methods of genomics, transcriptomics, tissue engineering, the search for new drugs," said Alexander Kagansky. "This year, the conference is also characterized by busy workshop sessions: a series of classes on working with the latest technologies will be held in the laboratories of the university."

The master classes were organized by FEFU in cooperation with a number of companies: Bioline (Russia), Helicon (Russia), and Beckman Coulter (USA). Scientists, students, and medical practitioners of the region will be taught to work with the CytoFLEX Flow Cytometer (a type of analyzer) and the Ion S5 Next-Generation Sequencing System (DNA analysis).

The Future of Biomedicine International Conference is held at Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) for the second time. The scientific forum gathered 70 authoritative researchers from Russia, Great Britain, China, USA, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Turkey, and Switzerland. For the first time, the FOB Conference was held at FEFU in 2015—one of the most important results was the internship of students of the School of Biomedicine and the School of Natural Sciences at the University of Edinburgh.
