A group of young researchers of Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) has created a new type of optical ceramics. The material can be used in terrestrial and space optical communication, for pollution monitoring, development of precision instruments for measuring distances, implementing new modes of laser processing, recording and storing information.

Optical ceramics was obtained as a result of a series of works on the design of transparent polycrystalline materials with predetermined properties, which is performed by the team of young FEFU scientists under the direction Denis Kosyanov, the senior research fellow, School of Natural Sciences. The results of the development have been published in the Ceramics International journal and the application for the invention was filed with Federal Agency for Intellectual Property, Patents and Trademarks (RosPatent).

According to Denis Kosyanov, the created YAG: Nd optical nano ceramics is distinguished by high content of active additives and its physical and mechanical characteristics exceed those of the the commercial glass and single crystals, currently used in laser technologies.

The research is carried out under the federal ministerial project and the FEFU Competitiveness Enhancement Program (5top100 Project). The results of previous stages of work were previously published in high-ranking scientific journals, viz. Journal of Alloys and Compounds, Journal of the European Ceramic Society, Ceramics International, Optical Materials and others.
