Students of Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) won the 2018 United Nations National Model Award at the New York international conference. The world's largest forum of young diplomats was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and brought together more than 5,000 participants from all continents. The FEFU team was awarded the highest title of Outstanding Delegation.

FEFU was represented at the conference by: Veronica Tkachenko, Alexey Stanonis (Oriental Institute—School of Regional and International Studies), Ekaterina Tretyakova and Diana Tereshchenko (School of Economics and Management).

Simulating the work of the United Nations, the FEFU students took on the role of Samoan diplomats and represented the state in the Fifth Committee of the UN General Assembly, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, and the United Nations Population Fund. Participants discussed issues of global importance, including the elimination of chemical weapons, reproductive health, and the actions of UN peacekeepers. Brilliant performance of the FEFU young diplomats was highly appraised and the university team won the main award.

“We spent four days of hard work: students took the lead in debates, I successfully passed the interview for the position Chairman of the Committee and worked in the Secretariat. There were only positive memories of friendly communication with participants from various countries, productive work and, of course, about the victory,” said Ekaterina Tretyakova. “We plan to hold our conference—the Model UN of the Russian Far East in May 2018—at the highest level using the energy and knowledge we received at the international forum.”
