More than 70 students from Russia, the Republic of Korea and Brazil took part in the conference organized by Model United Nations of the Russian Far East at Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) on May 14-17. The topic of the conference was the availability of energy, cooperation in the provision of humanitarian assistance and the peaceful use of outer space.

The participants were personally welcomed by Ganbold Baasanjav, the Head of subregional office of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific of East and Northeast Asia, Danil Scherban, FEFU Vice-President for International Relations, Nadezhda Khristoforova, Professor of FEFU School of Natural Sciences and Head of the world's only international UNESCO Department "Marine Ecology", Alexander Zubritsky, Director of the Far Eastern Branch of Russky Mir Foundation.

“FEFU is a great place to hold such a conference, because the university itself resembles a UN model. More than three thousand foreign students from 74 countries study here. The guys know about the most important problems not only of the Russian Far East, but also of the Asia-Pacific region and even the whole world, which gives us unique opportunities to discuss the global agenda and form a new world view”, said Danil Shcherban.

The conference program includes lectures from experts, trainings, debates and excursions. During the discussions, the participants represent the interests of their chosen countries, modeling the work of the committees of the General Assembly and the UN Security Council and offering their own solutions to global problems. In the end, future diplomats and public figures should come to a consensus and write a general resolution. Participants who show themselves to be the best delegates during the event will have the opportunity to represent Russia on the UN International Model in the autumn of 2019.

“The principles of the conference allow you to acquire valuable skills: to organize teamwork, to discuss, to find compromises”, said the event coordinator Alena Plekhanova.

“Model United Nations of the Russian Far East” is one of the largest youth organizations in the region, its Vladivostok branch is based in FEFU. By participating in conferences and debates, students develop leadership skills, learn the art of negotiation, public speaking, diplomatic etiquette, and intercultural communication. The best participants annually represent Russia at international conferences in the USA, the Republic of Korea, China and other countries.
