Fifteen Japanese students visited Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) under the first academic exchange program with Tokai University. The guests listened to lectures on the relationship between Russia and Japan, got acquainted with the language and cultural features of the country. This is the follow-up to the FEFU students' internship in Tokyo, which took place in February 2018 as part of the academic exchange agreement between the universities.

The academic program was prepared by the leading faculty members of the Oriental Institute–School of Regional and International Studies, the School of Arts and Humanities, the School of Biomedicine, and the Center of Russian Language and Culture. Master classes on painting matryoshkas, national cuisine and traditions were also held for the participants; and the Japanese students themselves introduced Russian peers to the basics of calligraphy and the history of the Japanese kimono. The cultural program was complemented by a visit to the ballet on the Mariinsky Theater Primorsky Stage and an excursion to the Primorsky Oceanarium.

The exchange program between FEFU and Tokai University launched a large-scale project on the development of social and humanitarian relations between the two countries, which is being implemented by the Ministry of Education of Japan under the agreement between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The program is set to continue up until 2021 and stipulates for 220 students to participate on each side.
