Master-classes were held twice over the course of two weeks. Future designers, architects, art critics, journalists and even interpreters attended this event and asked Rolph Gobits their questions.

First of all, the photographer spoke about modern tendencies in photo art. With the development of digital technologies, the process of taking photos has become much easier. A great selection of cameras makes this process affordable for almost everyone. So it is very difficult to stand out amongst all the photographers.

“Every shot should contain some story that may interest people,”  noted the professional.

Gobits also spoke about his own experience. Once it took him 12 days to take a picture. The idea was that there was a candelabrum with 3 candles in the hall, and one of these candles had a logo of the product Gobits was hired to advertise. The production team needed to show that when a gust of wind came through, two candles went out and the one with the logo continued to burn. It was a very difficult project – making the set decorations took a week. When they started to photograph the scene, the main difficulty was to light the candelabrum with incandescent lamps and at the same time to light the snow coming through a window with a flash to create a freeze frame effect. Additionally, it was important that wind machines didn’t blow out the candle with the logo.

“I never had to work so long in order to take only one picture. We had to solve a lot of problems to create a perfect image. But from the very beginning I knew – I was able to give the customer what he wanted,” said Rolph Gobits.

Rolph Gobits also agreed to comment on the photo works of the FEFU students. He liked a lot of their pictures. Portraits, landscapes and journalistic  photography are very different, but from the beginning of his seminar, Rolph Gobits promised to be diplomatic and not to offend the young photographers. The students had a great chance to see their pictures from a new angle.

The fifth-year student of FEFU School of Regional and International Studies, young photographer Mikhail Voronin said, “Rolph Gobits has his own vision, his own individual style. He is against editing photos using such programs as Photoshop. The main thing, according to his words, is not to be afraid of experiments. I like his works and I consider his lecture to be very interesting and useful.”
