And the students of FEFU will help him.
The second stage of FEFU’s competition to attract world-renowned faculty and academic staff has begun. After close examination, nine specialists were chosen to present their projects. Six of them will present in March.
On February 28, an environmental design proposal was presented by Carlos Renzo Zeballos Velarde from the Research Institute of Humanity and Nature (Kyoto, Japan). Dr. Zeballos’ project is devoted to the creation of a laboratory where experts will be engaged in the reconstruction of the Vladivostok seafront.
“Vladivostok is a unique city in the context of landscape. But still much work has to be done here,” Carlos Zeballos said. “I have three main goals in my project: to make it a referential case for International Academia; to present useful solutions to the reconstruction of the Vladivostok seafront for local government; and, of course, to achieve commercial success,” Dr. Zeballos said.
According to him, it is necessary to first analyze the integral landscape of the city and to determine problems connected with the seafront. When presenting his project, Dr. Zeballos showed the committee pictures of the largest cities in developed countries (Japan, the USA, Canada, Australia, Spain), where the seafront design is quite unique. The cultural centers of these cities are situated near the water and citizens can easily admire the beautiful landscapes, while in Vladivostok, there are only two esplanades for people to enjoy. This is the problem that Dr. Carlos Zeballos hopes to remedy. He is planning to develop an urban planning map and to study foreign countries’ experience on the reconstruction of seafronts that are geographically similar to Vladivostok. After that, he believes he, in coordination with FEFU, will be able to create a plan for Vladivostok seafront reconstruction.“I believe that my project will be very useful for Vladivostok because it can revitalize the city. Besides, our research can be used for sharing experience with other cities and countries,” Dr. Zeballos said..
The members of the Committee, headed by the Vice-President for Science and Innovations Dr.Anvir Fatkulin, were impressed by Dr. Zeballos’ presentation, and asked him many questions. When asked how he sees himself at FEFU, Dr. Zeballos responded that he plans to teach students landscape design and architecture and also to train them on computer programs that are used by world leading designers.
The laboratory, headed by Dr. Zeballos, would be interacademic, and specialists from different departments of the university would be needed there. According to the opinion of the Committee, Dr. Zeballos’ project deserves support from FEFU President Dr. Vladimir Miklushevskii, who will make the final decision on this matter.
Dr. Carlos Zeballos graduated from the National University of San Augustin (Arequipa, Peru), specializing in architecture and urban planning. In 2007 he defended his thesis, titled “Evaluation of development characteristics of urban landscape in Arequipa from 1868 till 1940” at Kyoto University (Japan). Currently, Dr. Carlos Renzo Zeballos Velarde is the senior expert of the Research Institute of Humanity and Nature (Kyoto, Japan).
