Secretary General of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities Dr. Christopher Tremewan met with the acting governor of Primorsky Region (FEFU President) Dr. Vladimir Miklushevskii.
The establishment of a network university of APEC countries was the main topic of discussion at the meeting of the Secretary General of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities Dr. Christopher Tremewan and the acting governor of Primorsky Region Dr. Vladimir Miklushevskii, which took place on March 12 in Vladivostok. Dr. Miklushevskii suggested the network cooperation between the universities last year, and Dr. Christopher Tremewan, who has recently become the APRU leader, approves and supports this idea.
According to Dr. Miklushevskii, the creation of the network university, based on APRU (Association of Pacific Rim Universities), will increase academic mobility, strengthen the cooperation with leading universities of Asia-Pacific region, and produce a number of high-quality joint Master’s programs.“The cooperation will be very important not only for FEFU, but also for Primorsky Territory in general,” Dr. Miklushevskii said. “The appeal of the region will increase; local graduates will want to continue their education here and students from other regions who come here and enroll at FEFU will be able to study at our network partner universities.
As Dr. Tremewan reported, the total number of students at APRU affiliated universities is 1,7 million, who are taught by more than 170 thousand teachers. The total budget of all APRU universities is more than 50 billion dollars.“The data shows that we can realize great projects in the Asia-Pacific region. And at the meeting with FEFU representatives we discussed possible joint scientific and educational initiatives and international academic programs,” Dr. Tremewan said.
During the meeting, Dr. Miklushevskii supported the idea of establishing a working group to deal with the issues of supplying and financing the network university.“I thought about this issue and I’m ready to provide a number of FEFU suggestions at the international conference in May, so that we could present complete solutions at the APRU meeting,” he said.
Far Eastern Federal University is the only Russian university included in the Association.
The Association of Pacific Rim Universities was founded in 1997. One of its founders is Far Eastern National University (now FEFU). Today, the Association unites 42 leading research institutes in the Asia-Pacific region; this includes universities in USA, Canada, Mexico, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Korea, Japan, China, and Taiwan.
One of the main annual events of the Association is the meeting of university presidents and rectors. In 2011 this meeting took place in the USA, at the University of Oregon. The location for the presidents meeting in July 2013 will be Far Eastern Federal University.
