A videoconference was held between Far Eastern Federal University and Simon Fraser University on April 6, at the School of Regional and International Studies. During the event, students from Russia and Canada discussed the problems of Sino-Russian relations. Questions regarding Chinese migration to the Russian Far East, the Sino-Russian economic relationship, and Russia and China’s viewpoints on the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) were discussed at the conference.
Some of the discourse was dedicated to rather specific themes: the mythological aspect of Sino-Russian relations; the problems of tolerance with respect to Chinese migrants; opinions on the initiation of a free trade area between China, Japan and the Republic of Korea; the Sino-Russian strategic partnership as described in “International Affairs”. The participants of the conference were also interested in the questions of a perceived “Chinese threat”, the problems of migrants from China adapting, and the military component of Sino-Russian relations.
Both sides gained invaluable experience by discussing such questions of immediate interest in the sphere of international relations. The students of Simon Fraser University noted the high level of English used by their Russian colleagues.
This event demonstrated successful cooperation between the FEFU School of Regional and International Studies and universities of other Pacific Rim countries.
