The history of the partnership between Far Eastern Federal University and Tottori University of Environmental Studies (Japan) extends back over 9 years. Annually the delegations from these universities meet to determine the directions of cooperation for the next year and to discuss plans for expanding the list of partner projects.
The latest Tottori University of Environmental Studies visit, headed by Vice-President Kavahara Michihiko, took place at FEFU on September 20. Within the walls of the university, guests were met by the Vice-President for International Affairs Andrey Babko and Department of International Programs and Projects Director Elena Saprykina.
This April Tottori University of Environmental Studies obtained a new status as a public university. Mr. Kavahara Michihiko explained the significance:“Public, in our understanding, does not mean a state university, but a regional one, whose main shareholders are the prefecture and Tottori. There are more than 80 such universities in Japan. For 11 years Tottori University operated as a private university, managed by a private company. In April 2012, the management of the university was transferred to the prefecture and the city; now regional development has become one of the main tasks of our establishment,” FEFU’s high-ranking guest said.
Both Mr. Kavahara Michihiko and Andrey Babko recognized that the new statuses of Far Eastern Federal University and Tottori University of Environmental Studies give a powerful boost for development of relations between the universities.
The guests from Tottori University provided their FEFU colleagues with a list of discipline on which their Japanese professors are successfully conducting research.
“The topics being worked on at Tottori University are also being examined in several FEFU Schools: in the School of Natural Sciences, and in the School of Engineering, and in the School of Economics and Management,” Andrey Babko said. “We’ll pass this information along to our Schools, so the professors can choose for themselves the topics on which they would like to pursue joint research.
Department of International Programs and Projects Director Elena Saprykina briefly spoke about priority areas of research, on which future projects will be realized at FEFU. For example, within the priority area of research on World Ocean resources, joint work regarding the problem of marine pollution seems to be an extremely promising field.
Elena Saprykina also invited the guests to attend the large International Conference on Cooperation between Russia and North-East Asia countries, which will be organized next June at FEFU, under the auspices of the Primorski Krai administration. The conference will take part during the annual meeting of APRU presidents.
