National Science Foundation: Navigating the new Arctic

The National Science Foundation invites applications for its navigating the new Arctic programme. This supports research at the intersection of the social, natural, environmental, physical, computing and information sciences to improve understanding of Arctic change and its local and global effects. Closing date: March 5, 2021.
Projects must fall into one of the following three tracks:
- planning grant track, for planning activities leading to convergence research team formation and capacity-building to address the challenges of the changing Arctic, its global impact and advancing Arctic science and engineering through education – worth up to USD 300,000 for a maximum period of two years;
- research grant track – for creative proposals for fundamental research that tackle scientific and engineering challenges related to the Arctic – worth up to USD 3 million for a maximum period of five years;
- collaboratory grants – for collaborative projects that address wide-reaching themes related to the New Arctic, with the aim of providing the foundation for the cultivation of long-term ideas, collaborations, research, synthesis and investment in the future of convergence science in and regarding Arctic change – for a maximum period of five years, with no budget restrictions.
Foreign organisations may apply provided they do so in consortium with US organisations. The proposer must explain why local support is not feasible and why the foreign organisation can carry out the activity more effectively.
The total budget is USD 30m, to fund up to 20 awards.
