FEFU Research Library's history dates back to 1899 to the foundation of Institute of Oriental Studies. Initially, it increased its unique holdings thanks to gifts from other Russian universities, private book collections, scholarly works by professors of Institute of Oriental Studies as well as rare editions brought at international expeditions or ordered from Berlin, Shanghai, Tokyo and other cities.

Today FEFU holds over 2 million volumes in Russian, German, English, French, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Arabic, Czech, Spanish, Latin and many other languages dating from the 16th -  21st centuries. Full-text online access is provided to thousands of worldwide journals via 71 national and international e-databases. FEFU was among the first in Russia to have installed the automated library system Virtua (VTLS Corporation).

FEFU Research Library users have access to scientific journals in printed and electronic form, electronic library systems (ELS) containing textbooks, teaching aids, monographs; Russian databases; electronic books published by Elsevier and Springer, Oxford Russian Foundation; archives of journals of major international publishers: the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), Annual Reviews, Cambridge University Press, etc.

The FEFU Research Library is very proud of the fund of rare editions, the only one of its kind in the Russian Far East, which has over 45 thousand items, starting from the 17th century.

FEFU Research Library has its own "Electronic Library" - these are the works of FEFU professors, articles, abstracts of dissertations, textbooks and teaching aids, digitized documents from the fund of rare publications, etc. One of the components of the "Electronic Library" are full-text bibliographic indexes for scientific fields created by the Library’s employees.

The FEFU Research Library is the methodological center of the Zonal Methodological Association (ZMA) of university libraries in the Far East region. It coordinates the activities of these university libraries: organizes and conducts regional conferences, meetings of interuniversity sections in all areas of information and library activities; identifies, studies and implements innovative technologies that help improve the quality of information and library services for users in the practical activities of the Scientific Library and university libraries of the ZMO Far East region.
