The current state of the natural environment in the area of the mined-out opencast Porechenskiy (Primorye)

Abstract: The article deals with the current state of the natural environment in the area of the mined-out opencast Porechenskiy (Oktyabr’skiy District, Primorye). Landscape surveys, testing of river and quarry waters as well as that of bottom sediments were carried out. It has been established that the processes occurring as a result of the interaction of water with rocks are accompanied by an increase in the concentrations of dissolved substances and a change in the composition of surface waters. However, the greatest pollution is caused by agricultural work carried out in the territory under consideration. It has been demonstrated that the opencast coal mining has resulted in changes in the geography of the land and the appearance of the forms earlier uncharacteristic of the area: denudation (quarry excavation) and accumulative (overburden dumps) ones. No pollution of bottom sediment has been detected. The conclusion is that the current state of the natural environment in the area of the mined-out opencast Porechenskiy is satisfactory and the area is suitable for wildlife habitat, but actions should be taken to flatten the slopes of the excavations and rock dumps.

Key words: mined-out opencast, surface water, pollution, landscape.
