Simulation of suitability of the Navstar GPS system to ensure efficient operation
of a ship's onboard measuring system on sea trials

It is very important for the crew to have knowledge of the service characteristics of their ship since it secures the latter’s commercial success. It is only sea trials that enable one to appreciate if the ship’s service characteristics projected earlier turned out to be efficient of have been preserved after repairs. In recent years, the ship GPS-receiver has replaced more expensive specialised measuring systems and become the primary device to receive information during sea trials. However, the system NAVSTAR GPS makes it impossible to determine with equal accuracy the location and speed of the vessel twenty four-hours a day. The article presents a method by which, prior to the trial, the device may be preset to be activated at the designated intervals, so that service characteristics of the ship might be specified much better.

Key words: GPS-receiver, technical and operational characteristics, accuracy of coordinates, field trials of ship.
