Nov 16, 2023 - FEFU News

Experts from the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) and their counterparts from the Institute of Russian, Eastern European and Central Asian Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) will co-develop the competencies of a new generation researchers to advance joint scientific, technological, and economic projects between Russia and the People's Republic of China (PRC). The parties concluded this agreement during the visit of the Chinese delegation to the FEFU campus.

Given the current geopolitical situation, Russia and China are steadily strengthening their cooperation, and the Russian Far East plays a key role in this international dialogue. However, the qualitative building of ties requires new approaches in the fields of expertise and analytics. The top priority is the demand for specialists able to perform several functions at once, such as assisting Russian business, finding exclusive niches, coordinating trade and economic activities, and working in multidisciplinary teams. The realization of such essential approaches is in the limelight of experts from the FEFU and the Institute of Russian, Eastern European and Central Asian Studies of CASS.

“Leaders of our countries discussed a possible trade turnover of 200 billion USD by the end of the year. Recently, this indicator seemed high, however, for today, we may safely say that it can be easily achieved. Furthermore, it is possible to envisage an increase in this figure, which, respectively, means the interpenetration of the Russian and Chinese economies. Along with trade and economic cooperation, we observe the enhancement of ties in the educational sphere and the development of humanitarian projects", emphasized Evgeny Vlasov, Vice President for International Relations at the FEFU, during the meeting with the representatives of the CASS.

Besides, Evgeny Vlasov has mentioned how the FEFU contributes to the cooperation between Russia and China. The university promotes the growing exchange of youth with Chinese universities and actively supports sports and cultural initiatives. In view of economic collaboration, all mentioned activities help to create a positive ambience full of friendship, mutual understanding, and a good neighborhood. By virtue of the FEFU representation in the PRC, experts at the university possess a wealth of information. They can analyze this data and produce recommendations for the capitals of these two countries, Moscow and Beijing, and for regional representative offices. For example, government establishments in the Primorsky Territory and the northeastern Chinese provinces can become recipients of such an advisory.

Li Zhenli, the head of the delegation of the Institute of Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, noted that the FEFU is a respected partner of the CASS, and the interaction of organizations is important for intensifying the dialogue between Russia and China. At the same time, as Mr. Zhenli noted, next year CASS and FEFU should organize an exchange of scientists, continue joint scientific projects and consider the possibility of launching new ones.

It should be noted that in 2018, on the basis of the CASS, the Far Eastern Federal University opened its representative office in Beijing. At the same time, centers focusing on Russian - Chinese studies were established. One of the main goals of such a center in FEFU is training more young researchers of a new generation who are able to develop joint scientific and technological projects between the Russian Federation and China. As a result of this work, the university is becoming a unique platform for combining education, science and production, which in the future will help Russian and foreign students engage in the development of scientific and technological potential of two countries.

It should be recalled that the PRC is one of the key partners of the university: FEFU is building cooperation with more than 60 public and private educational institutions, scientific institutes, government organizations and foundations of China. In recent years, the university has significantly expanded its representative offices – 15 Centers of Russian Language and Culture have been opened in China. Ties with the southern provinces have also been strengthened. Thus, in 2024, a joint institute will be opened in Chongqing on the basis of the Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications. Preparatory work is underway to launch a FEFU branch in Guangzhou.
