FEFU campus became an airfield for paper planes

"Ostrov.ru" newspaper. Last weekend in building S of the FEFU campus a preliminary round of Red Bull Paper Wings worldwide championships, paper plane launching tournament, took place. The event attracted student from all over Far East: 120 people took part in the championship.

As to the organizers, preliminary rounds of the fourth Red Bull Paper Wings World Series championship started in nine cities of Russia on March, 1st. Unusual competitions will take place in 30 major universities of the country. Artyom Ganzha, a student of the Oriental institute – School of regional and international studies, became an organizer of the event in FEFU.

"Aircraft creators competed in three disciplines: "Distance", "Time", and "Aerobatics". Three winners from Far East will go to St. Petersburg on April, 5th to domestic level competitions to try to enter world final in Austria. Best pilots from 80 countries will launch planes in the final", explained Artyom.

Each "pilot" had two attempts to launch a plane. The competition started with "Distance" discipline. The very first result beat all expectations – 24 meters 40 centimeters. An attempt by Ilya Kim. Only 23rd competitor, Matvey Smetanko, managed to beat Ilya's record – his plane flew a distance of 24 meters 53 centimeters which became new Russia's record (as it turned out later the record was beaten by a competitor from Tyumen).

"On March, 12th I won a trail selection, like here, everyone could compete", told vl.ru a second-year student of the Engineering school, Matvey Smetanko (Mechatronics and robototronics specialization). "To fly as far as possible a plane should be extremely narrow. As a rocket. All competitors here have their own secrets: someone counts on gliding, someone on throwing power. I rely on the second thing. In creating my own paper planes, to be honest, descriptive geometry helped a lot. When I was a kid I liked, like everyone, launching paper planes, but they were primitive, this is another level here. Before the competition I prepared and found the optimized plane design.

Second stage – "Time". At this stage a competitor had to create and, what's most important, to launch a plane so that it would glide in the air as long as possible. A VSUES graduate, Nikolay Donskov, was the best to complete the task.

The main idea of the third stage of selection, "Aerobatics", was a show. Within one minute a competitor had to demonstrate a plane's flying characteristics, design, performance showiness and style were also assessed. Two competitors, Gennadiy Chernov and Matvey Karnachev, got a score of 30. After hot argument the judges decided to award a win to Gennadiy, a freshman of FEFU Business and public administration school (Business informatics specialization): his plane design was more unique.

We would not have been able to hold this event without FEFU SACS, they helped both with the venue and organization. I would like to express special thanks to SACS sports training center (STC), especially a STC deputy administrator Karina Velichko, pointed out Atryom Ganzha.

The results of the Far Eastern stage of Red Bull Paper Wings-2015:

"The farthest flight" category: 1st place – Matvey Smetanko (24.53 m).
"The longest flight" category: 1st place – Nikolay Donskov (9,3 sec).
"The best aerobatics" category: 1st place – Gennadiy Chernov (jury total score – 30.00)
