The results of the XXI Vietnamese Language Olympiad were announced during a formal city ceremony held at the Ho Chi Minh Monument. This year, the Olympiad was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Ho Chi Minh's first visit to Vladivostok, the 70th anniversary of the historic Vietnamese People's Army victory at Dien Bien Phu, and the 49th anniversary of the liberation of South Vietnam.

Students studying Vietnamese in different centers across Russia took part in the Olympiad by writing essays in Vietnamese and presenting them to the jury comprised of Vietnamese language teachers from the Department of Pacific Asia at the Institute of Oriental Studies - School of Regional and International Studies of the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) and chaired by Professor Alexander Sokolovsky.

The winners of the Olympiad were honored at an award ceremony hosted by Mr. Nguyen Dang Hien, the Vietnamese Consul General in Vladivostok. First place was shared by Alexandra Savenko, a student at FEFU, and Mikhail Osin, who studies at the MSU Institute of Asian and African Studies. FEFU students Maria Tizhina and Danil Ukhalov took second place. Maxim Okhotnikov and Daniil Sarafanov, who also study Vietnamese at FEFU, got third place. Given the upcoming anniversary of Ho Chi Minh's initial visit to Vladivostok, the essays predominantly focused on the Vietnamese leader and the first democratically elected president of free Vietnam. The jury acknowledged the exceptional quality of the projects and their delivery, expressing gratitude to the students for their enthusiasm towards Vietnamese language, history, and culture.

"Ho Chi Minh is a role model for our youth. He is an exemplar of patriotism, love for his homeland, and the struggle for its independence. The Vietnamese leader traveled all over the world. However, only in Russia he found a place where he learned how to achieve freedom and defend the independence. He loved our city and visited it three times. The students' essays for the contest commemorating the 100th anniversary of Ho Chi Minh's initial visit to Vladivostok showcased their profound understanding of Vietnamese language and history, as well as their engagement in the wellbeing of our allied nation, a solid partner of Russia on the international stage," said Alexander Sokolovsky.

To remind, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is one of FEFU's priority strategic partners in the Asia-Pacific region, and the university has one of the strongest schools of Vietnamese studies in Russia. Every year, the FEFU Institute of Oriental Studies – School of Regional and International Studies invites students to join the Vietnamese specialization within the program Linguistic Support of Interstate Relations. This academic year, 33 Russian students are studying Vietnamese at the university, while the total number of foreign students from Vietnam is 57. Each year, with the support of the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam and the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, FEFU students majoring in Vietnamese studies spend 10 months improving their language skills at the faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Language in the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Hanoi. During the previous academic year, 15 individuals pursued studies abroad.
