International Ice Mechanics School & Seminar will be held at Far Eastern Federal University from January 25 to February 5. The Second Ice Mechanics School at the FEFU campus on Russky Island will bring together 30 students and young researchers from Russia, China, Republic of Korea, India, Indonesia, and Norway. Under the guidance of the leading scholars of the FEFU School of Engineering and the invited speakers the School participants will acquire more theoretical and practical knowledge on the properties of ice and on the mechanisms of its impact on the marine structures. Newly acquired knowledge will help them join the large-scale projects of the Arctic region exploration.

Ice Mechanics School will be opened with an intensive English language lecture series. The School participants will get exposed to the theoretical foundations of oil and gas field infrastructure development at the continental shelf, will learn more about the basic terms in the field of physics and properties of the ice, will get acquainted with the principles of the engineering in ice conditions, and will get to know more about the modeling of ice loads and methods of calculation of reliability of ships and other engineering structures in the Arctic.

After mastering the theory, participants will do practical work with the natural material. Within few days, they will conduct experiments in the field, straight on the sea ice, by studying its properties, structure, irregularity of the ice coating, and by testing its strength, hardness, and fragility. A more detailed analysis of the properties of the obtained samples would be carried out by the young researchers at the university labs.

Ice Mechanics School is a part of a unique Arctic Project (link in Russian) of Far Eastern Federal University implemented in the framework of the FEFU Competitiveness Enhancement Program that is being supported by the 5top100 Project. The School has been organized for the first time in February 2015 and is expected to be held regularly in the future.

The first Ice School has brought together undergraduate and graduate students of the FEFU School of Engineering, including the school’s students from India and China, and representatives of Vladivostok-based Nevelskoi Maritime State University, young researchers and experts from Saint Petersburg, Rostov-on-Don and Finland.
