Nov 25, 2019 - FEFU News

The brightest and largest event of autumn - the tenth International Student Unity Day (ISUD) - brought together more than 800 participants at Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU). Students from 55 countries, as well as 5 delegations representing the peoples of Russia, told about their culture to the guests of the fair, acquainted them with the national cuisine, and sparkled on the stage, performing traditional dances and songs. A large international festival introduces students to the traditions, art, and cuisine of countries and peoples whose representatives study at FEFU.

"2019 is a special year for FEFU. This year we celebrated 120 years since the opening of the Oriental Institute - the first university in the Far East and Eastern Siberia, as well as the decade of FEFU. This wonderful event - International Student Unity Day - takes place for the 10th time within the walls of our university. Today we can say with confidence that the first ISUD held 10 years ago laid the foundation of a very important university tradition. Over the years, the format of the event has changed, but it has invariably aroused great interest among students, the number of participants, delegations representing their country has grown, and most importantly, this festival of the unity of young people from different countries has always been prepared by students themselves. It is impossible to overestimate the contribution of ISUD to the strengthening of international relations. Additional knowledge about the history, culture, and traditions of the peoples of different countries helps to expand significantly the horizons of young people, improve mutual understanding and greatly benefit future young professionals in their professional activities," said FEFU First Vice President Andrey Shushin.

"Today's event is aimed at achieving harmony among students from all countries. FEFU teaches languages and culture. Students from all over the world, including Japan, also study here. The University is located in close proximity to Japan and other Oriental countries. As a result, there is active cooperation with Japanese universities - for example, Tokai University. Thus, FEFU is closely connected to Japan and other Asian countries. Establishing international student relations is fundamental to building good interstate relations. This is the future bridge between the countries," said Nakamura Koichiro, Consul General of Japan in Vladivostok.
A distinctive feature of the country is its state symbols. One of the most striking events of International Student Unity Day was the parade of peoples. The delegations of the participating countries marched with the flags of their states and republics, showing the vast geography of the event. Throughout the day at the exhibition-fair, students presented national costumes, games, household items, held workshops, performed national dances and songs. The participants and guests of the festival had the opportunity to attend a festive concert, where unique numbers of each delegation were demonstrated.

"Each nation is unique in its own way, has interesting traditions and history. ISUD gives the students an opportunity to get to know each other better, taste national cuisine and feel their culture. This year, for the first time as part of the event, the "Russian Week" section was introduced, where international students were introduced to the Russian culture of communication and traditions. International Student Unity Day is held not only to show Russian culture, but also to introduce students to other nations. Such events help people of different mentalities to better understand each other, respect cultures, live in a world without conflicts and attract more students from around the globe to the university", - said Polina Ryabykina, leader of the International Student Unity Day, a 4th year student majoring in "Tourism", FEFU School of Economics and Management.
International Student Unity Day is an annual festival of cultures, which has acquired a completely new format since 2013. Students of Far Eastern Federal University have the opportunity to get acquainted with the culture of not only other countries but also the national republics of Russia.

More than 3,500 foreign students from 74 countries study at FEFU in various forms of study. The University pays great attention to the adaptation of representatives of different countries to live in Russia, and the ISUD festival contributes to the strengthening of international friendship and the formation of tolerant relations among young people.
