News in Press-centre

Advanced methods of medical diagnostics, based on the analysis of patients' DNA, have begun to be performed at the Center for Genomic and Regenerative Medicine of the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU). The institution was created on the basis of the School of Biomedicine and is a kind of bridge between science and clinical practice, which allows using the latest achievements in the field of molecular and cellular diagnostics, biomedical technologies for combating dangerous diseases.

“Certainly, the introduction of new diagnostic technologies allows us to provide medical services according to new standards, to select an effective treatment. With the help of modern molecular and cellular diagnostics, we can predict possible diseases”, said Vadim Kumeiko, Deputy Director for Development of the FEFU School of Biomedicine.

The Center includes three laboratories: the Laboratory of DNA Diagnostics, the Laboratory of Genomic Medicine and the Laboratory of Biomedical Cell Technologies. Experts conduct advanced research related to the study of the mechanisms of the appearance of malignant neoplasms, develop new approaches to personalized treatment, introduce advanced principles of prognostic and preventive medicine based on the use of genetic analysis.

The laboratories assembled the most modern equipment, for example, a robotic complex for the isolation, processing and ultra-sensitive DNA identification. The device literally grows cell cultures from the biomaterial of diseased people, which then scientists and doctors of the FEFU Medical Center use for research. This approach allows you to choose an effective treatment. However, everyone can apply for genomic analysis.

Today, the center provides services such as diagnostics of infections, DNA diagnostics and genomic analysis of patient cells — prognostic studies that reveal the likelihood of serious diseases, as well as ensuring the identification of the molecular causes of diseases that have already arisen, knowledge of which will help improve the effectiveness of treatment and target drugs (drugs aimed at specific target molecules).

“Knowing the degree of a person’s genetic predisposition to developing a disease, doctors can recommend certain preventive measures. DNA research shows changes in genes; it is impossible to determine predisposition in another way. Our equipment allows us to carry out immediately a complex of studies that are associated with oncological diseases, disorders of the cardiovascular system, and metabolism. Through this analysis, you can even develop recommendations for nutrition, we are actively working on it. If overweight is caused by changes in the genes, regular diets will not help”, said Anna Stenkova, Head of the DNA Diagnostics Laboratory.

The Center for Genomic and Regenerative Medicine was established at the FEFU School of Biomedicine in the fall of 2017. The main tasks of the structural unit are the development and implementation of new methods for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of human diseases using modern technologies that work at the gene and cellular levels. The equipment of the scientific laboratories of the center makes it possible to identify the pathological genomes of all known organisms.
