Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) and the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) are preparing to launch a new Dual Master's Program in Biotechnology. Skoltech Professor Konstantin Severinov visited FEFU to discuss the joint educational project. It is envisaged that the first batch of students will be enrolled in 2017.

According to Vadim Kumeiko, Deputy Director for Development of the FEFU School of Biomedicine, the University has already been implementing the Master's Program in Biotechnology, but it needs a major upgrade. Plans are to make the new Master's Program be the interschool one by combining efforts of the FEFU School of Biomedicine and School of Natural Sciences with Skoltech.

"This is the only way we can open a top-notch world-class program," stressed Vadim Kumeiko. "Skoltech will help make it more focused on Molecular Biotechnology. For this purpose the School of Biomedicine will be useful as the unique laboratory facility and by experts in the field of Marine Bioresources Biotechnology, Pharmacology, Genetic Engineering, Molecular and Cellular Biology. The School of Natural Sciences will give the future Masters the essential competences in Cell Biology, Genetics, and Biochemistry."

"We hope that in 2017 part of the students, admitted to the Master’s Program in Biotechnology, will study their first year in Skoltech, where they will take multidisciplinary courses delivered by our best faculty," said Konstantin Severinov. "At the second year of study they will return to Vladivostok and will carry out specific research projects at the university laboratory facilities under the joint leadership of professors from FEFU and Skoltech. The graduates of the program will be awarded two degrees.”

The mutual interest to create the joint academic program of Far Eastern Federal University and the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology was announced in April this year, during the week of Skoltech in FEFU. The leading professors read lectures on Biomedicine and invited some students to undergo summer internship in the laboratories of the Institute.
