Apr 24, 2017 - Science and innovations

The robot station with elements of artificial intelligence is created by the Far East Federal University (FEFU) researchers for Progress Arsenyev Aviation Company. An automated line of multiple robots will produce cast parts from magnesium and aluminum alloys, which are widely used in the construction of helicopters.

The latest solution by the FEFU engineers was announced by Konstantin Zmeu, the Head of the Department of Industrial Production Technologies, School of Engineering, during a press tour for representatives of federal and regional mass media on April 13.

“When creating the line, we use standard accessories, but our researchers carefully study their use in a single technological line and introduce innovative solutions,” explained Konstantin Zmeu. “For example, for processing particularly intricate parts, we decided to apply a certain amount of artificial intelligence to the station. This means that he will be able to handle those parts that the robot is not aware of in advance. Right now we are working on this issue.”

Konstantin Zmeu showed an installation in the laboratory that allows one to implement on a scanty scale all the algorithms, approaches, and technical solutions to be introduced in the production. The large station of up to 8 meters long and weighing up to 10 tons will be installed directly at the manufacturing facility. In the future, the technology can be used not only at the Arsenyev Plant, but also at other enterprises in the military-industrial, automotive, and instrument-making industries.

The university's research team began to develop the high-tech robot station, commissioned by Progress Aviation Company, in 2016. Its installation is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2018. The project is implemented under the grant by the Russian Government Regulation No. 218, which stipulates the use of university's potential for the modernization of domestic enterprises.

This project continues cooperation between FEFU and Progress Arsenyev Aviation Company in the field of production automation. In early 2016, the plant launched the robot station created in FEFU for the processing of products made of polymer-composite materials. The station installed at the plant is used in the production of parts of the new multi-purpose Ka-62 helicopter.
