A new magnetic brain stimulator was developed by Boris Jung, Assistant Professor, School of Biomedicine, Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU). The proposed technology allows influencing safely and accurately on deep structures of the brain for training and development of neural resources, restoration of lost functions, as well as in the cognitive studies.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is the stimulation of the cerebral cortex by means of short magnetic impulses. As noted by Boris Jung, existing TMS devices do not allow one to affect the deep structures, they have many contra-indications and side effects. The new technique consists of a magnetic field emanating from a wire coil held outside the patient's head. In this case, the center of rotation of the magnetic field induction vector is located directly in the brain stimulation zone.

“The new stimulator is a helmet, inside of which hardware is located,” said Boris Jung, PhD in Engineering, Associate Professor, Department of Fundamental Medicine, Far Eastern Federal University. “The main difference from equivalents is safety and accuracy. The stimulation parameters are commensurable with the natural parameters of the Earth's magnetic field and do not exceed the Sanitary Rules and Regulations, the level of electromagnetic interference is much lower. Besides, the new method allows one to affect the deep structures of the brain with accuracy up to 1.5 millimeters.”

The FEFU researcher has already received three patents for his inventions. It is planned at the next stage to create a prototype of a stimulator, negotiations are underway with one of the largest factories in the Far East for the production of equipment. The estimated market price of the new device will be 7-9 times lower than the world equivalents, so the development has every chance to take a leading position in the market of technical means of TMS.
