Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) has joined the international environmental campaign Earth Hour. Students organized a flash mob, during which they lined up in a circle symbolizing the planet and marked it with light from their mobile phones next to the campus main building. The initiators of the unusual event were the members of the youth organization “Model United Nations of the Russian Far East”.
“The campaign gathered 120 people - much more than last year. Among those who came were not only our students, but also guests from Vladivostok State University of Economics and Service, Maritime State University and schoolchildren. We thank all of them and thank the sponsors of the event - the Panda Workshop, the cinema network Illusion, and the Oriental Center for Foreign Books, which provided prizes for the participants”, said one of the organizers, FEFU student Maxim Sorokin.
After the flash mob, the participants took part in the thematic quiz, all questions were related to environmental protection. Many of them provoked active discussion by students.
“In the 21st century, the level of environmental awareness is an important aspect of modern life. The university actively supports initiatives aimed at raising environmental awareness of young people. For many students, this campaign will become a starting point from which people will become interested in the environment and will be able to contribute to the preservation of the environment of our planet”, said Igor Filippov, Director of the Department of Extracurricular Activities at FEFU.
Earth Hour is an international campaign held annually by the World Wide Fund for Nature, its main goal is to draw public attention to global environmental issues. Millions of people all over the planet turn off the light for one hour as a sign of indifference to the future of the planet. At the same time, the lights of the most famous buildings and monuments of the world go out.
Model United Nations of the Russian Far East is one of the largest youth organizations in the Russian Far East that helps young people improve the world around them and develops student leadership. The participants implemented such significant events as the APEC Youth Forum 2012, the Third Youth Summit Russia - ASEAN 2015 and others. The Vladivostok branch of the organization operates on the basis of FEFU.
