The Far Eastern Federal University has developed curricula according to which students of schools in Shandong Province will learn Russian. A delegation of directors and heads of educational institutions visited Vladivostok and got acquainted with the FEFU educational methods. Far Eastern Federal University will increase the number of students from Shandong by six times and hold advanced training courses for Chinese teachers of the Russian language.

After the March meeting between the leaders of Russia and China, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, 13 schools in the Chinese province of Shandong decided to introduce the study of the Russian language into the educational program. Each of these institutions will have a specialized classroom.

Curricula for schools were developed by the Far Eastern Federal University, whose specialists have extensive experience in teaching Russian as a foreign language. The heads of Shandong schools managed to evaluate the methods during a recent visit to Vladivostok, during which the parties discussed the prospects for further cooperation.

“We believe that FEFU is a very good platform for further development of cooperation between Russia and China. It trains highly qualified personnel, including specialists who can speak Russian and Chinese — such people will be able to make a really serious contribution to the development of our trade and economic relations,” said Chen Fayu, director of the Russian Language Training Center of Shandong University of Finance and Economics.

Interest in learning the Russian language was shown not only by institutions of secondary education, but also by Shandong universities. Now representatives of six of them are preparing to visit FEFU in order to analyze local practices of learning the Russian language by Chinese citizens, and six more universities will join in the second wave.

“Now in the province of Shandong we have already formed a community of educational institutions whose students have the opportunity to study Russian — in total we cooperate with 12 universities. We will organize joint work with the Russian side so that our Russian language teachers can be trained here, within the walls of the Far Eastern Federal University,” Chen Fayu added.

According to FEFU President Boris Korobets, the Far Eastern Federal University fully supports cooperation with educational institutions of the PRC and helps to introduce the Russian language into the curriculum of schools and universities. In addition to developing curricula and conducting advanced training courses for Chinese colleagues, the university will increase the number of students from Shandong province by six times - from 100 to 600 people.

“The People's Republic of China is a strategic partner of our university. We are constantly expanding the range of joint international projects. Of course, for fruitful work in this direction, we need highly qualified specialists from both sides - both from Russia and China.
We annually graduate dozens of specialists with knowledge of the Chinese language. In addition, many Chinese students study here - at FEFU - in various programs. We are striving for closer cooperation, establishing warm, friendly relations with our Chinese partners. We are constantly expanding the horizons of our capabilities, and I am sure that the joint work will be productive and lay the foundation for the implementation of new initiatives in the field of academic partnership between the Russian Federation and the PRC,” Boris Korobets concluded.
